That special type of clay

For almost 20 years, I have watched as my subculture has been steadily, stealthily and skillfully co-opted by a new generation of large corporations that has siphoned the creative ambition of  independent projects through mimicry and subsequent mass promotion. It's my job to fire up the cultural ambitions of the rest of us - of YOU, basically, now that you're reading this.

Interference with the basic law of nature -- that the People are the repository of true creativity -- has become easier with the consolidated control of society's cultural metabolism as effected by the Mass Media. A natural network of communication, intelligence,  information and bias within the souls of society is rapidly being replaced by a systematic virulence on the behalf of corporate marketers that have figured out the trappings of alternative culture while still promoting their own consumerist and conformist agenda.

To route around this, and to fire up your ambitions on a neurological level, I have designed the following visualization.

Can thought be shaped?  intelligence does not exist in physical reality, but our generation has become accustomed to  existing in the virtual world. If you can close your eyes and envision your intelligence, right now, you can choose to visualize what you are looking at as a cube made of a special type of clay. You can see the imperfections in it, and then you can sculpt it with habit substitution, making new friends etc.

If it's possible to envision your own intelligence as something that can be shaped with your will and follow-up action, consider your scene. Consider your surroundings. Your "market" as it were. Can you sense the intelligence that pulses along the sidewalks and flows into the storefronts and through the post offices? If you can close your eyes and feel that pulsing network spread out from your feet, out your front door and from there clear across the world, that is the network. Now, take that same network - or more precisely, the specific portion of it that you care about - and fold it up. Fold it like the largest map possible. Feel the localized intensities where cities and hotspots of human activity emanate endless energy. Now that you've folded the map as much as possible, realize that it too is made of that special type of clay. And you can squeeze it down into a cube made of that same special type of clay.  Just like your own intelligence.  You can see the imperfections in it, and then you can sculpt it -- with custom vinyl stickers, for instance. :)

Custom stickers are one of the many ways you can hack society's pattern - or shape the clay that is your scene. Mass media is a mere placebo for true culture from the people -- so much more exciting than the "folk" moniker that is associated with individual creative productivity. Provide your scene with the fruits of your talent - actually promote your project! If you've got a creative project, you have forged a new tool for shaping your subculture. As you promote, you are shaping that special type of clay.

What are you trying to do with your project? What would you like the  final sculpture to look like? Who do you want to affect? One of the things I love about the medium of custom vinyl stickers as the precision with which you can distribute your ideas. This kind of precision -- where you select carefully who and where your idea is deployed for  maximum intended effect and minimum unintended negative consequences, such as bothering people who don't want to be promoted at -- just feels like sculpting to me, on a psychic level. What do you think?

stickers and brand building

What corporations and Presidential campaigns alike have long ago discovered is the concept of "brands" and "branding".  Your brand is NOT just your logo - it's everything that is "stored in the mental file folder" of your project.  So with Starbucks, for instance, the IMMEDIATE brand association may be "coffee" - obviously a very valuable association to dominate in our caffeinated society - but their headquarters has done tons to create OTHER valuable associations, such as "place to hang out" or "yuppie fix" or "comfy couches" or "time to kill before the flight".

I made a slideshow about how stickers and sticker campaigns can be excellent ways for any small brand to make a big impact.  A sticker campaign isn't just "printing up stickers" - it's doing so with a kind of strategy, ranging from an informal decision to spread your stickers to people at Ozzfest to a tightly coordinated operation.  At any rate without further ado, here it is - let me know what you think !

Atomic Promotion

Your stickers are the basic building block of your promotion. StickerNation exists to keep fueling the engine of your project's promotion as you rocket towards your destination, be it fame, fortune, feelings or fun.

You get more than one sticker when you order from us.   You get at least a hundred.  You should burn through that stack of a hundred and order more, because every single sticker you give out that actually goes up (always give them to people who want them, never waste a sticker by pushing one on them) acts like a "link" to your project or your website or whatever it is you want to remind people of without actually being there.

Not sure if you are aware of all the ins and outs of running a successful website but one of these perspectives is called "search engine optimization".  SEO for short.  SEO is all about building links into your website, so that search engines see you as a site with authority, especially if the sites linking to you are authoritative.

Stickers act the same way.  Stickers are like tiny billboards that decorate our streets, giving us a feel for the rhythm of an area, shining a well-deserved spotlight on local art, music, and commerce.

Each sticker you give out that actually goes up LINKS anyone who might actually see and pay attention to it with your brand.  What might that mean?  Maybe they'll take out a sharpie and a moleskine and write your band's name and website down because they really like your logo and your band name and your taste in placing or distributing your sticker.  If you get a sticker in their hands, and it goes up on, say, their fridge, chances are the tacit exhortation of your sticker - "c'mon! check us out!" - will find its way into the lucky recipient's mind.

This is advertising, this is persuasion, this is a gentle form of voluntary hypnosis.  More than anything else, it is the way human beings relate to one another and you should not be ashamed that you have ideas and projects that are worthy of the attention of your fellow creatures.  Being shy about the quality you are creating or the events you are throwing simply robs the rest of us of your talents and makes the world a poorer place.

Buying advertising, however, is ridiculously expensive and totally A.D.D.  What do I mean?  I mean, each day brings a new issue of a newspaper, a new search obsession for your potential audience, a new tidal wave of magazines and television shows and news tidbits to your mental doorstep.  Advertising funds most of this media.  The only hope for the success of such campaigns, in contrast with the intimacy of spreading stickers around your scene, is the budget for endless repetition and cheap humor.

StickerNation is founded on the principle that everybody loves stickers.  It's true.  Ok, sure, there are some sourpusses out there, but rare is the sticker that is turned down or tossed away.  Stickers are valuable options to redefine the world, and every one of us loves the power to do that - that's what life is all about!  You are letting them into your "club".  How can they refuse?

So don't skimp on having stickers as the lynchpin of your promo strategy.  Don't languish in obscurity without people across town not even knowing your name.  Don't spend a godzillion dollars on promo either.  Just print some stickers with us and then take them to a cool house party and hand out stacks of them to everyone who wants to help get them up.

Let stickers be the "atom" - the smallest, most indivisible component - of your strategy to make a difference with your music, your small business, your art, your website.  Get a logo, send it to us, complete your order and watch as we get your limited edition logo stickers to you in two weeks (USA).  Visualize what you'll do with a stack of your logo on vinyl stickers !  Where would you go?  Who would you want to give them to?  Who out there in the world would really GET what you're trying to do with this logo?  Find those people and embrace them all.  Life is too short to ignore those who are actually listening to you.  Thank them with stickers and watch as they amplify your buzz around the world.  Just watch as I go ahead and take my own advice ;)

IT ONLY GETS BETTER FROM HERE.
